Fresh from the Fairways: August Edition
Introduction
By Jon Wilson, Centre Manager
Hello everyone.
Summer has a way of slipping by while you’re busy watching history happen.
Since our last issue, it’s been nonstop drama – from Shiho Kuwaki’s ice-cold playoff win at Royal Lytham to Spain taking the World Cup in New Jersey. But over at Royal Birkdale, Ryan Fox didn’t just win the Claret Jug; he demonstrated that if the world’s best can play the biggest tournament of the year on golden brown turf, it’s good enough for your Sunday medal.
And honestly? It looked fantastic.
Back home at Duxbury Park, the heat has been relentless, but the course has held up really well.
You feel it out there – the turf is crisp, firm, and playing fast. Our greenkeeping team has done incredible work keeping the greens rolling true through the peak sun, while our classic parkland fairways embrace that sun-baked, firm-and-fast summer roll. Whether you’re navigating our 18-hole course, fine tuning your game on the Toptracer® Range, or cooling off with a drink outside the clubhouse, it’s a great time to be here.

50 Shades of Beige: Why Brown Fairways Are Golf’s Best Look Yet.
By Jon Wilson, Centre Manager
If you caught The Open at Royal Birkdale, you saw the world’s best players firing tee shots onto fairways that looked less like Augusta and a lot more like a freshly toasted slice of sourdough.
For years, we’ve been conditioned to expect pristine, emerald-green carpets as the norm. But with prolonged dry spells becoming the standard, expecting hyper-irrigated grass during a drought isn’t just unrealistic—it puts an unsustainable burden on the land and the people who care for it.
A sunburnt fairway isn’t dying. It’s resilient turf doing what it was built to do. If the world’s best can play the biggest tournament of the year on golden brown grass, it’s good enough for your Sunday medal.
Out here at Duxbury Park, as the glorious summer weather continues, that same dry period has taken hold. The course is playing hard and fast, with the sun-baked parkland letting drives roll out far down the fairways. Yet despite the heat, the course is holding up exceptionally well – a credit to a greenkeeping team dedicated to presenting the land at a high standard, day in and day out.
That resilience hasn’t come without a few sleepless nights behind the scenes.
Irrigation breaks during a dry stretch will test anyone’s nerves, but the crew worked quietly to ensure presentation never wavered. As part of ongoing upgrades, 12 greenside sprinklers have been replaced, delivering precise hydration straight to the putting surfaces where it’s needed most.
Meanwhile, behind the curtain, regular maintenance keeps our entire fleet tuned up and ready as we gear up for the back end of the season.
So next time you stand on the tee framed by the mature trees, look down, and see more beige than green beneath your feet, don’t complain. Enjoy the extra thirty yards of run and fun, trust the firm bounce, and go high-five your greenkeeper.
After all, fortune favours the firm.

Silverware, Strategy, and the Next Generation
Summer is where golf stories are made – whether that’s holding your nerve on the 18th green with a trophy on the line, or stepping onto the tee box for the very first time with newfound belief.
We recently wrapped up our Club Championships, the highlight of the summer calendar. The course was playing fast, the greens were tested, and the competition was as sharp as ever. A massive congratulations to [Name], who navigated the conditions, stayed calm under pressure, and emerged as our 2026 Champion. It takes serious focus to come out on top over thirty-six holes, and it was a victory thoroughly deserved.
Birkdale Drama: Did You Pick the Winning Fourball?
What a sensational week of golf at Royal Birkdale. Huge congratulations to Ryan Fox on a dramatic victory to lift the Claret Jug. As an outside bet heading into the week, it’s no surprise he flew under the radar on almost everyone’s fantasy team. And, of course, a massive shoutout to local favorite Tommy Fleetwood, whose stellar performance had the home crowd roaring all weekend long.
Behind the scenes, the competition in our Loyaltee Golf® Open Fantasy Fourball was just as fierce.
Out of hundreds of entries, five mastermind managers assembled the ultimate line-up, tying at the top with an astonishing combined score of -24. Following a tie-breaker random draw, our Grand Prize winner has been selected to receive the ultimate VIP Experience at their local Loyaltee Golf® venue:
- 18 Holes of Golf for 4 players (including complimentary buggy hire)
- Fresh Barrel & Stone® Pizzas on the terrace after the round
- A Dozen TaylorMade® Tour Response Golf Balls for every player in the group

Recognising Excellence: A Double Celebration for Franklin
A great clubhouse experience isn’t just about good food and cold drinks – it’s about the atmosphere, the welcome, and the people who make you feel right at home the moment you walk through the door.
We’re absolutely thrilled to announce that our latest Employee of the Quarter award has been presented to Franklin Kilner.
Franklin’s tireless work ethic, calm composure during busy rushes, and genuine warmth with members and visitors alike have made him a standout presence behind the scenes and out on the floor.
To top off a fantastic quarter, hard work hasn’t gone unnoticed: Franklin has also officially been promoted to Duty Manager across our Food & Beverage and Clubhouse operations. Stepping into this leadership role is a natural fit, and we know his attention to detail will keep the clubhouse running smoothly through the rest of the peak summer season and beyond.
A massive congratulations to Franklin on both a well-deserved award and a brilliant step forward in his career. Next time you’re in for a post-round drink or a bite on the terrace, be sure to join us in raising a glass to him!

A Landmark Day: Welcoming “Golf Fore The Ages” to the Fairways
Golf at its very best is a game that belongs to everyone. It’s about the pure joy of a well-struck shot, the quiet camaraderie between holes, and the shared thrill of being out in the open air – no matter your background or ability.
We were honored to recently host the inaugural event for Golf Fore The Ages, a fantastic initiative dedicated to making the game accessible to all.
Over 15 golfers with mixed disabilities took to the course for their very first official outing. The weather couldn’t have played its part better – delivering clear skies, warm sunshine, and ideal playing conditions from the first tee box to the final putt.
To see the course filled with such energy, determination, and genuine enjoyment was a highlight of the season for our team. The feedback from the players was overwhelming, with everyone thoroughly soaking up the atmosphere, the challenge of the layout, and the welcoming spirit of the club.
And Finally...
There’s a distinct shift in the air as August reaches its peak. The shadows stretch a little longer across the fairways, the evening light turns a deep amber, and every round feels like one to savour.
Now, we’re heading straight into the last Bank Holiday weekender of the summer – the ultimate excuse to leave the routine behind. Whether you’re lining up a long weekend of golf, chasing the late-afternoon light with out twilight deals, or kicking back on the terrace with a cold drink and the family, this is the stretch of the season we wait all year for.
The fairways are firm, the weather is waiting, and the bank holiday is yours for the taking.
See you on the fairways soon!
