Fresh from the Fairways: August Edition

Introduction

By Jon Dummett, Head of Golf

Summer has a way of slipping by while you’re busy watching history happen. From the major drama at Royal Birkdale to the high-stakes thrills of international sport, it’s been a season to remember. But back on our own fairways across the country, the real story of the summer has been written in golden turf, firm bounces, and incredible community spirit.

Here is your consolidated wrap-up featuring the standout stories and best updates from across the Loyaltee Golf family this month:

1. 50 Shades of Beige

If you caught The Open at Royal Birkdale, you saw the world’s best players firing tee shots onto fairways that looked less like Augusta and a lot more like a freshly toasted slice of sourdough.

Across all our venues – from the chalk-backed hills of Portsmouth to the mature parklands of Duxbury, Richmond Park, and Tilgate Forest – relentless dry weather has taken hold. But a sunburnt fairway isn’t dying; it’s resilient turf doing what it was built to do. While our fairways have embraced that extra 30 yards of firm, summer roll, our greenkeeping teams have worked tireless, data-led miracles behind the scenes to keep our putting surfaces hydrated, true, and resilient.

Next time you step onto the tee box and see more beige than green beneath your feet, enjoy the extra run, trust the firm bounce, and give your greenkeeper a well-deserved high-five!

If golden brown fairways are good enough for the world's best, they're good enough for your weekend fourball!

2. Centenaries, Champions, and Inclusion: Community Stories

It’s been a historic stretch on the competition front across our courses:

  • Centenary Celebrations: Portsmouth Golf Club officially marked its 100th Anniversary on July 25th, dedicating the full course to a 120-player shotgun start that raised vital funds for The Rowans Hospice.
  • Club Championships: Duxbury Park wrapped up its marquee summer tournament in thrilling fashion, while also hosting Golf Fore The Ages – a landmark event where golfers living with disabilities or long-term health conditions took to the fairways for an inspiring day of competition.
  • Giving Back in Capital Style: Richmond Park Golf Course played host to the Perennial Charity Golf Day, bringing golfers together on its lakeside veranda to raise funds for the dedicated workers who keep Britain’s green spaces thriving.
A big shout out to everyone that made the 100th Anniversary event such a success

3. Greenkeeping Excellence & Technical Agronomy

Protecting putting surfaces through extended heatwaves requires precision and constant adaptation.

  • At Tilgate Forest, the team has been using daily soil-moisture data, 9mm micro-aeration needle tines, and canopy syringing to lower turf temperatures when heat spikes past 34ºC.
  • At Richmond Park, major autumn maintenance is slated across the Duke’s and Prince’s courses to relieve drought-related soil compaction, backed by plans for expanded on-site water storage for 2027.
  • People Power: We were thrilled to welcome fresh leadership, including Blair Clark (Assistant Course Manager at Tilgate) and Ben Dollery (Deputy Head Greenkeeper at Portsmouth), while celebrating Portsmouth Head Greenkeeper Rob Rogers as Employee of the Quarter.
Welcoming Ben Dollery to the team, our new Deputy Head Greenkeeper at Portsmouth Golf Course

4. Long Evenings, Great Food, and Next-Gen Golfers

The action off the course has been just as vibrant:

  • Terrace Vibes & Great British Savings: Long summer days mean staying open late. Our pizza ovens have been staying lit until 8:00 PM on weekdays, paired with our budget-friendly £6.99 Kids’ Clubhouse Menu and dog-friendly outdoor terraces.
  • On-Course Refreshment: Our new fleet of catering buggies has been a hit out on the fairways, delivering cold drinks and snacks straight to players mid-round.
  • Junior Rippers: Across our venues, PGA-led 5-Day Junior Camps have seen young golfers sharpen their swings, build course confidence, and battle it out in Friday tournaments.

5. Fantasy Fourball Champions & National Recognition

To top off an incredible summer:

  • Yahoo News Recognition: Richmond Park Golf Course was officially named one of London’s top places to play golf, recognizing the tireless work of our staff across Europe’s busiest 36-hole complex!
  • The Open Fantasy Fourball: Over in our group-wide contest, five mastermind managers tied at the top with a mind-blowing score of -24 to claim our grand VIP Fourball experience package!

Thank you to all our members, visitors, and hard-working course teams for making this summer on the fairways one for the history books. Enjoy the upcoming Summer Bank Holiday weekend, remaining warm evenings and make the most of the extra yards!
