Fresh from the Fairways: August Edition
Introduction
By James Green, General Manager
Hello everyone,
Summer has a way of slipping by while you’re busy watching history happen.
Since our last issue, it’s been nonstop drama – from Shiho Kuwaki’s ice-cold playoff win at Royal Lytham to Spain taking the World Cup in New Jersey. But over at Royal Birkdale, Ryan Fox didn’t just win the Claret Jug; he demonstrated that if the world’s best can play the biggest tournament of the year on golden brown turf, it’s good enough for your Sunday medal.
And honestly? It looked fantastic.
Back home at Portsmouth, the heat has been relentless, but the course has held up well.
You feel it out there on the hills – the turf is crisp, firm, and playing fast. Our greenkeeping team has done incredible work keeping the greens rolling true through the peak sun while the fairways embrace that classic, sun-baked summer roll. Whether you’re taking in the sweeping views from the high holes, or cooling off on our rooftop terrace, it’s a great time to be here.

50 Shades of Beige: Why Brown Fairways Are Golf’s Best Look Yet.
By Robert Rogers, Head Greenkeeper
If you caught The Open at Royal Birkdale, you saw the world’s best players firing tee shots onto fairways that looked less like Augusta and a lot more like a freshly toasted slice of sourdough.
For years, we’ve been conditioned to expect pristine, emerald-green carpets as the norm. But with prolonged dry spells becoming the standard, expecting hyper-irrigated grass during a drought isn’t just unrealistic – it puts an unsustainable burden on the land and the people who care for it.
A sunburnt fairway isn’t dying. It’s resilient turf doing what it was built to do. If the world’s best can play the biggest tournament of the year on golden brown grass, it’s good enough for your Sunday medal.
Up here high on Portsdown Hill, that same dry period has taken hold. The course is playing hard and fast, with the chalk-backed soil letting drives roll out far beyond where they’d usually stop. While the fairways are fully embracing that golden, baked-out roll, our greens have held up remarkably well.
That resilience is down to some quiet, tireless work behind the scenes.
Our irrigation system has been working overtime to provide much-needed hydration straight to the putting surfaces where it matters most. Earlier this season, our greens maintenance program went exceptionally well, with a rapid recovery. As part of that, we ran a successful overseeding program – introducing fresh seed deep into the solid profile of our putting surfaces. That investment is paying off now, keeping the greens true while the rest of the land bakes in the sun.
Behind the curtain, our full fleet of machinery just came off its recent summer service, ensuring everything is tuned up and ready as we prepare for the back end of the season.
So next time you stand on the tee – if you see more beige than green beneath your feet, don’t complain. Enjoy the extra thirty yards of run and fun and go high-five your greenkeeper.
After all, fortune favours the firm.

A Century on the Hill: Celebrating 100 Years of Portsmouth Golf Club
A century of golf is something rare and special. One hundred years of early morning tee times, changing coastal winds, and generations of golfers standing on the same tee boxes looking out over the Solent.
On Saturday, July 25th, Portsmouth Golf Club officially marked its 100th Anniversary. It was one of those memorable summer days – over 120 golfers took to the course for a celebratory tournament, bringing a century of history to life in the best way possible: through sharp competition, shared stories, and a buzzing clubhouse terrace. A huge thank you to everyone who joined us to make it a landmark moment in our history.
That celebratory momentum rolls right into one of the biggest weeks on our calendar.
From August 12th through August 16th, Portsmouth Golf Club hosts its annual Open Event. Whether you’re looking to test your game against a strong field or simply experience the course playing at its fast, firm peak, it’s a week you won’t want to miss.
Entry forms and full details are available now at www.portsmouthgc.com. Grab your spot, bring your best game, and come be a part of the next chapter.
Pure Summer Golf. Zero Long-Term Strings.
Let’s be honest: not everyone plays the game the same way year-round. When the sun is out, the evenings stretch long, and the fairways are baked fast, you want to be out here as much as possible. But maybe you’re not ready to lock yourself into a twelve-month commitment when winter rolls around.
We get it. That’s why we built the Loyaltee 1-Month Plan.
It’s our most popular flexible option for a reason. You get complete member access, full perks, member discounts, and unlimited rounds for 30 days right when the course is playing at its absolute best.
No year-long contracts. No hidden catch. Just a full month of squeezing every last drop out of peak season golf.
Golden Hour Golf, Made Effortless
There’s a quiet magic to the end of the day on a golf course. The sun drops low, long shadows stretch across the fairways, and the afternoon heat begins to yield to a calm evening breeze. It’s the best time to be out here.
Now, you can make those twilight rounds even better.
Our popular Sunchaser deal has been incredible popular this summer and it’s easy to see why: you can add an EZGO Electric Buggy to any off-peak or twilight tee time for just £20! Whether you’re squeezing in eighteen after work or cruising through nine as the sun sets, it’s the easiest way to elevate your round.
- Regular price £28 (usually £20)
- Valid for twoball bookings
- Offer valid from 2pm Monday to Friday

Birkdale Drama: Did You Pick the Winning Fourball?
What a sensational week of golf at Royal Birkdale. Huge congratulations to Ryan Fox on a dramatic victory to lift the Claret Jug. As an outside bet heading into the week, it’s no surprise he flew under the radar on almost everyone’s fantasy team. And, of course, a massive shoutout to local favorite Tommy Fleetwood, whose stellar performance had the home crowd roaring all weekend long.
Behind the scenes, the competition in our Loyaltee Golf® Open Fantasy Fourball was just as fierce.
Out of hundreds of entries, five mastermind managers assembled the ultimate line-up, tying at the top with an astonishing combined score of -24. Following a tie-breaker random draw, our Grand Prize winner has been selected to receive the ultimate VIP Experience at their local Loyaltee Golf® venue:

The 19th Hole Comes to You: On-Course Hospitality at Its Best
Over the past few weeks, our new catering buggy has been making the rounds across the course, and the response has been fantastic. Whether it’s an ice-cold beverage on a warm fairway or a quick snack to power you through the back nine, having fresh refreshments meet you mid-round has gone down a treat.
It’s quickly become one of the best additions to the Portsmouth experience, which is why we’re already working to expand the service – bringing it out more often so cold drinks and quick bites are never far from your next shot.
Keep an eye out for it rolling down the fairway on your next round!

The Minds Behind the Greens
A great golf course is only ever as good as the team caring for it. Behind every true roll on the greens and every well-maintained fairway is a crew of dedicated people working long before the first tee time of the day.
On July 1st, we were delighted to welcome Ben Dollery to the team as our new Deputy Head Greenkeeper. Ben has settled in seamlessly over the past few weeks, bringing a huge amount of energy, fresh perspective, and a sharp skillset to the role. His experience is already making an impact, and his addition strengthens our turf management team as we navigate the peak summer stretch.
At the same time, we’re proud to announce that our recent Employee of the Quarter award was presented to our Head Greenkeeper, Rob Rogers.
Leading a course through record heat, relentless sun, and prolonged dry spells is no easy task. It requires patience, deep agronomic knowledge, and endless early mornings. Rob has led from the front through these challenging conditions, working tirelessly to ensure the greens stay true and the course is presented at its absolute best day in and day out.
A massive congratulations to Rob on a well-deserved award, and a warm welcome again to Ben – the course is in phenomenal hands.

Golf, Community, and a Century of Impact
Special milestones deserve to be celebrated in style, and our 100th Anniversary tournament on July 25th was a true testament to what makes this club and community so unique.
To mark the occasion, Portsmouth Golf Course dedicated the entire venue to the centenary event, hosting a full-course shotgun start that brought over 120 players together on the fairways at the exact same moment. Beyond handing over the tee sheet for the day, we were proud to donate a selection of prizes to support the event’s competitions and help make the day as memorable as possible for everyone involved.
Most importantly, the celebration was rooted in a cause that touches so many lives in our local area. The entire day was dedicated to raising vital funds for The Rowans Hospice, an extraordinary charity that provides compassionate care and support to local families when they need it most.
While the final numbers are still being tallied, the generosity shown across the course and in the clubhouse was incredible. We look forward to sharing the official fundraising total very soon.
A massive thank you and well done to everyone who played, supported, donated, and helped make this historic day such a resounding success.
And Finally...
There’s a distinct shift in the air as August reaches its peak. The shadows stretch a little longer across the fairways, the evening light turns a deep amber, and every round feels like one to savour.
Now, we’re heading straight into the last Bank Holiday weekender of the summer – the ultimate excuse to leave the routine behind. Whether you’re lining up a long weekend of golf, chasing the late-afternoon light with a Sunchaser buggy, or kicking back on the terrace with a cold drink and the family, this is the stretch of the season we wait all year for.
The fairways are firm, the weather is waiting, and the bank holiday is yours for the taking.
See you on the fairways soon!
