A note from the General Manager

Hello everyone,

To say it’s been a “wet” start to the year would be the understatement of the century. We’ve seen enough rain lately to make us consider trading our golf clubs for kayaks, and I know how frustrating the resulting course disruption has been.

I want to start by acknowledging our greenkeeping team. They have been nothing short of heroic, working in difficult conditions to protect our turf and manage the constant rain. Their dedication is the reason we still have a course to return to.

Most importantly, thank you for your patience. We know how much you’ve missed not being to get out on the course as often as you’d like, and we truly appreciate the support you’ve shown us while we’ve navigated these constant disruptions.

The Golf Season Is Loading…

The good news? There is light at the end of the tunnel. Spring is officially on the horizon, the ground is finally beginning to dry, and The Masters is just weeks away. Nothing signals a fresh start like the azaleas at Augusta and the return of longer, sunnier days.

Dust off the clubs – better weather is coming, and we can’t wait to see you back on the fairways.

Head Greenkeeper's Update

Course Status & Winter Improvements

While we are currently operating on a reduced course layout, this allows us to maintain our high standards of course protection during the wetter months. Our greenkeeping team has been maximising every window of favorable weather to push forward with several key winter projects:

  • Landscape Management: Extensive tree work and shrub clearance to improve airflow and turf health.
  • The 4th Tee: We are in the final stages of remodeling the 4th tee area to enhance both aesthetics and playability.
  • Greens Maintenance: Please note that essential maintenance is scheduled for March 16th and 17th. These works are vital for ensuring premier putting surfaces throughout the peak season.
Investing in the Future

We are committed to continuous improvement through significant investment in our infrastructure and equipment:

  • Machinery & Turf Care: A brand-new mower is joining our fleet in early March, ensuring precision cutting as the growing season begins.
  • Irrigation Upgrade: We are modernising our irrigation system. This project focuses on operational efficiency and sustainability, allowing for more targeted water usage and better long-term resource management.
Enhancing the Member & Guest Experience

We are thrilled to announce upgrades to our service fleet for the 2026 season:

  • Expanded Buggy Fleet: Five brand-new buggies are arriving soon, providing more availability and improved comfort for your round.
  • On-Course Refreshments: We have officially taken delivery of a new catering buggy. Keep an eye out for it on the course soon—it’s designed to bring high-quality refreshments directly to you while you play.

Clubhouse & Catering

Fresh Flavours & Enhanced Viewing: What’s New at the Clubhouse

We are thrilled to announce that we are in the final stages of perfecting our new 2026 Clubhouse Menu, featuring seasonal ingredients and updated classics. Stay tuned for the official launch!

In the meantime, don’t forget that we offer a premium selection of takeaway coffees and hot breakfast rolls – the perfect solution for those busy mornings when you’re on the move. Our kitchen is currently serving daily from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

To further improve your experience, we’ve installed three additional large-screen TVs. Whether it’s a weekend tournament or a midweek match, the clubhouse is now the premier spot to catch every moment of live sports in an immersive atmosphere.

Team Update

We are delighted to announce the promotions of Michael Morgan to Food & Beverage Manager and Daniel McLoughlin to Duty Manager. Both Michael and Daniel have demonstrated exceptional dedication to our standards of service.

In their new leadership capacities, they will collaborate closely with Golf Operations Manager Blake Docherty and the broader team. Together, they are committed to elevating our operational excellence and ensuring a premier experience for every member and guest who visits the club.

Community News

We are delighted to congratulate Blake Docherty on successfully completing his Community Golf Instructor Course with England Golf.

This certification is more than just a personal achievement; it marks a significant step forward in our commitment to the local area. With Blake’s new expertise, we are expanding our coaching programs to reach a wider audience, breaking down barriers to entry, and ensuring that golf is a sport everyone can enjoy. We are proud to have Blake leading the charge in our mission to make the game more inclusive, diverse, and accessible to all.

And Finally...

We’ve officially survived the worst of the winter slog, and there’s light at the end of the tunnel. While you’ve been drying out your gear, we’ve been working double-time behind the scenes to ensure Portsmouth Golf Course is in prime condition for our biggest season yet.
