Fresh from the Fairways: August Edition
Introduction
By Paul Day, General Manager
Hello everyone,
Summer has a way of slipping by while you’re busy watching history happen.
Since our last issue, it’s been nonstop drama, from Shiho Kuwaki’s ice-cold playoff win at Royal Lytham to Spain taking the World Cup in New Jersey. But over at Royal Birkdale, Ryan Fox didn’t just win the Claret Jug; he demonstrated that if the world’s best can play the biggest tournament of the year on golden brown turf, it’s good enough for your Sunday medal.
And honestly? It looked fantastic.
Back home at Richmond Park, the heat has been relentless, but the course has held up well.
You feel it out there on the fairways – the turf is crisp, firm, and playing fast. Our greenkeeping team has done incredible work keeping the greens rolling true through the peak sun. Whether you’re working through a bucket on the range, riding the wind on the back nine, or cooling off on the lakeside veranda, it’s a great time to be here.

50 Shades of Beige: Why Brown Fairways Are Golf’s Best Look Yet.
By Roger Mills, Course Manager
If you caught The Open at Royal Birkdale, you saw the world’s best players firing tee shots onto fairways that looked less like Augusta and a lot more like a freshly toasted slice of sourdough.
For years, we’ve been conditioned to expect pristine, emerald-green carpets as the norm. But with record-breaking dry spells becoming the standard, expecting hyper-irrigated grass during a drought isn’t just unrealistic – it puts an unsustainable burden on the land and the people who care for it.
A sunburnt fairway isn’t dying. It’s resilient turf doing what it was built to do. If the world’s best can play the biggest tournament of the year on golden brown grass, it’s good enough for your Sunday medal.
Out here in the heart of Richmond Park, that same dry stretch has taken hold. Both the Prince’s and the Duke’s are playing hard and fast, offering that glorious summer roll down the fairways. But while the outer areas embrace the golden warmth, our greens have held up exceptionally well – a testament to relentless work behind the scenes and an irrigation system that’s been running overtime.
However, keeping putting surfaces alive during one of the driest years on record comes with a catch: the massive volume of water required leaves the soil compacted and tired. To set the course up for long-term health, essential recovery work begins soon.
Autumn Greens Maintenance: August 24th
Greens maintenance kicks off on August 24th – taking two days on the Duke’s and two days on the Prince’s. This year, we’re implementing a targeted three-step process to give the turf much-needed relief before winter:
- Verti-Draining: Deep aeration to break up compaction and restore deep drainage.
- Hollow Coring: Removing built-up thatch to help the profile breathe and absorb future rain.
- Scarifying: Cleaning up lateral growth to keep putting surfaces smooth and clean.
Looking to the Fairways & Bunkers
The extreme weather means our autumn renovation plans are ambitious. We’ve doubled our seed order for the fairways this year, but timing is everything. Demo runs showed that the turf is currently too brittle to work; we need natural moisture before renovations can safely begin. To make the most of the weather window when it arrives, we’ve partnered with external agronomy specialists to execute a rapid fairway seeding and recovery program before winter sets in.
Similarly, fairway weeds have thrived in the dry conditions. Chemical treatments require guaranteed soil moisture to avoid harming the surrounding turf, so spraying will commence the moment rainfall allows. Meanwhile, as cooler evening temperatures reduce the need for constant hand-watering, the team will turn their attention to topping up bunker sand across both courses.
Managing Animal Damage
Due to prolonged dry conditions, local wildlife is currently targeting our greens & tees – the only soft ground on the course.
To protect the course long-term, our greenkeeping team is repairing damaged areas with sand instead of topsoil. Topsoil encourages animals to keep digging, while sand acts as a natural deterrent.
Although these sand repairs might look a little unsightly in the short term, they are essential to protect the greens while respecting Richmond Park’s vibrant wildlife ecosystem. We appreciate your patience!
Investing in the Future: 2027 Irrigation Expansion
After two consecutive years of severe drought, it’s clear the climate is shifting – and our infrastructure must shift with it. Our original irrigation setup was never designed for the extreme demands of modern summers, leading to depleted water reserves that placed extra stress on our tees this season.
To solve this, we have formal proposals in place to significantly increase our on-site water storage for 2027. Following last year’s investment in a bespoke control panel, we will also be replacing both main irrigation pumps to complete a full overhaul of our water management system.
So next time you stand on the tee at Richmond Park, see more beige than green, and watch your drive pick up an extra thirty yards of run and fun – enjoy it. Trust the firm bounce, support the essential maintenance work ahead, and go high-five your greenkeeper.
After all, fortune favours the firm.

A Day for the People Behind the Greens
There are few better places to be on a warm summer day than looking out over the water from our lakeside veranda, listening to the sizzle of the BBQ and the sound of good conversation after eighteen holes. Today, that atmosphere is made all the sweeter because we’re playing for a cause that sits close to the heart of everyone who cares for the land.
Richmond Park Golf Course was proud to host the Perennial Charity Golf Day on 25 June.
With the summer sun shining down and the greens rolling pristine, we’re coming together to support Perennial – the UK’s only charity dedicated to looking after the people who build, care for, and protect our green spaces. From horticulturists and grounds staff to the greenkeepers who work tirelessly behind the scenes on courses like ours, Perennial provides a vital lifeline when times get tough.
A massive thank you to everyone who has joined us on the tees today to make this event so special. We’d also like to extend a huge shoutout to our sister company, Glendale, for sponsoring the day and helping us bring this landmark event to life.
It was a brilliant afternoon of golf, great food, fantastic company, and raising significant funds for an essential cause.

We get it. That’s why we built the Loyaltee 1-Month Plan.
It’s our most popular flexible option for a reason. You get complete member access, full perks, member discounts, and unlimited rounds for 30 days right when the course is playing at its absolute best.
No year-long contracts. No hidden catch. Just a full month of squeezing every last drop out of peak season golf.
Golden Hour Golf, Made Effortless

Now, you can make those twilight rounds even better.
Our popular Sunchaser deal has been incredible popular this summer and it’s easy to see why: you can add an EZGO Electric Buggy to any off-peak or twilight tee time for just £15 – half the regular £30 rate! Richmond Park Named a Top London Golf Destination
There’s something truly unmatched about stepping onto the tee in the heart of a Royal Park – surrounded by centuries-old trees, incredible wildlife and sweeping vistas, all just a stone’s throw from the bustle of London.
It’s a special mix of nature and sport, and we’re thrilled to share that Yahoo News has officially named Richmond Park Golf Course as one of London’s top places to play golf!
A headline like that doesn’t happen by accident. While our unique setting on the Prince’s and the Duke’s sets the stage, it’s the quiet, relentless work behind the scenes that turns a round of golf into a memorable experience.
A massive thank you goes out to our incredible team. From the greenkeepers working at dawn to keep the turf firm and true, to the clubhouse staff welcoming players off the 18th green, their daily dedication is the real engine behind this venue. It’s their passion that has made our 36-hole complex not just a local favorite, but one of the most visited golfing destinations in all of Europe.
To our members, visitors, and community – thank you for making every day on the course so vibrant.
And Finally...
There’s a distinct shift in the air as August reaches its peak. The shadows stretch a little longer across the fairways, the evening light turns a deep amber, and every round feels like one to savour.
Now, we’re heading straight into the last Bank Holiday weekender of the summer – the ultimate excuse to leave the routine behind. Whether you’re lining up a long weekend of golf, chasing the late-afternoon light with a Sunchaser buggy, or kicking back on the terrace with a cold drink and the family, this is the stretch of the season we wait all year for.
The fairways are firm, the weather is waiting, and the bank holiday is yours for the taking.
See you on the fairways soon!
