Fresh from the Fairways: August Edition

Introduction

By Michael Chapman, General Manager

Hello everyone,

Summer has a way of slipping by while you’re busy watching history happen.

Since our last issue, it’s been nonstop drama – from Shiho Kuwaki’s ice-cold playoff win at Royal Lytham to Spain taking the World Cup in New Jersey. But over at Royal Birkdale, Ryan Fox didn’t just win the Claret Jug; he demonstrated that if the world’s best can play the biggest tournament of the year on golden brown turf, it’s good enough for your Sunday medal.

And honestly? It looked fantastic.

Back home at Tilgate Forest, the heat has been relentless, but the course has held up well.

You feel it out there on the treelined fairways – the turf is crisp, firm, and playing fast. Our greenkeeping team has done incredible work keeping the greens rolling true through the peak sun while the fairways embrace that classic, sun-baked summer roll. Whether you’re taking in the sweeping views, or cooling off on our woodland terrace, it’s a great time to be here.

50 Shades of Beige: Why Brown Fairways Are Golf’s Best Look Yet.

By Jack Slade, Course Manager

If golden brown fairways are good enough for the world's best, they're good enough for your weekend fourball!

If you caught The Open at Royal Birkdale, you saw the world’s best players firing tee shots onto fairways that looked less like Augusta and a lot more like a freshly toasted slice of sourdough.

For years, we’ve been conditioned to expect pristine, emerald-green carpets as the norm. But with prolonged dry spells becoming the standard – like our recent eight-week stretch here in the Southeast without a drop of usable rain – expecting hyper-irrigated grass during a drought isn’t just unrealistic; it puts an unsustainable burden on the land and the people who care for it.

A sunburnt fairway isn’t dying. It’s resilient turf doing what it was built to do. If the world’s best can play the biggest tournament of the year on golden brown grass, it’s good enough for your Sunday medal.

Out here framed by the mature Sussex trees at Tilgate Forest, that same dry spell has taken hold. The course is playing hard and fast, letting drives roll out far down the fairways. But while the outer areas embrace that golden, baked-out roll, our greens have held up remarkably well.

That resilience is down to some quiet, precise, and data-led work behind the scenes:

  • Data-Led Moisture & Syringing: We use daily soil moisture readings to spot-water exact areas rather than blanket-spraying. When canopy temperatures spike past 34ºC, a quick misting program instantly cools the grass to prevent severe heat stress.
  • Protecting the Roots: We’ve raised the height of cut slightly to leave extra leaf tissue, helping the plant conserve moisture and keeping root systems deep.
  • Micro-Aeration (9mm Tines): Every few weeks, tiny 9mm needle tines puncture the greens. It causes zero disruption to your putt, but it breaks up dry crusting, prevents water runoff, and drives oxygen straight down into the root zone.
  • Adapting on the Fly: When our primary sprayer temporarily went offline, we quickly pivoted to granular wetting agents so our soil moisture cycle didn’t miss a beat.
  • Targeted Care & Disease Control: Drought and humidity create prime conditions for fungal outbreaks like dollar spot. A huge thanks to the team at Weed Management, who stepped in with rapid support while our equipment was serviced to keep our turf healthy. We’re also keeping thatch under control through light verticutting and gentle sand top-dressings.

So next time you stand on the tee at Tilgate Forest, look down, and see more beige than green beneath your feet, don’t complain. Enjoy the extra thirty yards of run and fun, trust the firm bounce, and go high-five your greenkeeper.

After all, fortune favours the firm.

Despite the intense heatwave, our team has done an incredible job of protecting the greens

Birkdale Drama: Did You Pick the Winning Fourball?

What a sensational week of golf at Royal Birkdale. Huge congratulations to Ryan Fox on a dramatic victory to lift the Claret Jug. As an outside bet heading into the week, it’s no surprise he flew under the radar on almost everyone’s fantasy team. And, of course, a massive shoutout to local favorite Tommy Fleetwood, whose stellar performance had the home crowd roaring all weekend long.

Behind the scenes, the competition in our Loyaltee Golf® Open Fantasy Fourball was just as fierce.

Out of hundreds of entries, five mastermind managers assembled the ultimate line-up, tying at the top with an astonishing combined score of -24. Following a tie-breaker random draw, our Grand Prize winner has been selected to receive the ultimate VIP Experience at their local Loyaltee Golf® venue:

In Good Hands: Expanding Our Greenkeeping Team

Stepping into a greenkeeping team in the middle of summer is no easy task. It means jumping straight into the deep end – navigating heatwaves, managing firm turf, and keeping 18 holes presented at their absolute best while the season is in full swing.

That’s why we’re delighted to officially welcome Blair Clark to the team as our new Assistant Course Manager.

Blair has hit the ground running from day one, bringing a sharp eye for detail, deep agronomic knowledge, and a work ethic that fits right into the heartbeat of our crew. Stepping in during the absolute peak of the season requires both adaptability and composure, and Blair’s immediate impact has already been felt across the grounds.

With new leadership on the course and a dedicated greenkeeping team behind the scenes, the future of our turf is in fantastic hands. Next time you see Blair out on the fairways or passing by the greens, be sure to give him a warm Tilgate welcome!

And Finally...

There’s a distinct shift in the air as August reaches its peak. The shadows stretch a little longer across the fairways, the evening light turns a deep amber, and every round feels like one to savour.

Now, we’re heading straight into the last Bank Holiday weekender of the summer – the ultimate excuse to leave the routine behind. Whether you’re lining up a long weekend of golf, chasing the late-afternoon light with a Sunchaser buggy, or kicking back on the terrace with a cold drink and the family, this is the stretch of the season we wait all year for.

The fairways are firm, the weather is waiting, and the bank holiday is yours for the taking.

See you on the fairways soon!

Michael Chapman
